THE ALGEBRA PROJECT IN ATLANTA SEEKS CLASSROOM ASSISTANTS

 

Undergraduate/Graduate Students – Math Cohort Classroom Assistants

 

The Algebra Project and Young People’s Project is seeking twenty (20) math or science undergraduate and/or graduate student candidates as Classroom Assistants in the Atlanta Public Schools (APS) Summer Induction Academy for rising 8th grade students and their math teachers each morning, and teacher professional development (PD) each afternoon, between Weds., June 3rd and Fri., June 26th, 2015.

Prospective Math Cohort Classroom Assistants will receive a $2,160 stipend ($120/day x 18 days) for participation in the June 3rd – June 26th, 2015 Summer Induction Academy (mornings) and Professional Development (afternoons) at Price Middle School. The Summer Induction Academy and PD also will prepare classroom assistants to work in math cohort classes during the 2015-2016 school year.

The 2015-2016 school year begins Weds., August 5th, in Brown, Bunche, Long, Price and Sylvan Middle Schools, and ends Weds., May 25th, 2016. We seek candidates who will be able to assist regularly in Algebra Project Math Cohort classrooms each week in these schools.  In subsequent years, classroom assistants will follow math cohorts into Therell, Washington, Carver and South Atlanta High Schools. Strong candidates are Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics majors with an interest in mathematics education and social justice. Stipends* will be offered 2015-2016, as well.

THE YOUNG PEOPLE’S PROJECT SEEKS COLLEGE MATH LITERACY WORKERS (CMLWs)

The purpose of the College Math Literacy Worker (CMLW) is to guide and mentor a team of High School Math Literacy Workers (HSMLW) through ongoing support in three main parts: 1) training, 2) prep and outreach, and 3) debrief sessions.

 

A CMLW is a peer-facilitator who will assist a team of high school students plan, organize, and deliver activities and lessons that are educational, exciting, and fun! During the process, college students will serve as mentors and supervisors to teams of HSMLWs.
