Speaker: Mr. Dean Landers
Speaker's Title and Affiliation: Mechanical Engineer, CRB Consulting Engineers
Seminar Title: To Engineer or Not to Engineer?
Abstract:
What kinds of opportunities can a Tech degree give you? What are the parts of your Tech degree that have universal applications? And, after you emerge haggard and exhausted from the halls of Georgia Tech… is engineering even worth it? Dean Landers isn’t far removed from his time as a student, but has both run from and fully embraced engineering as a career path. He will talk about his experiences on both sides of that spectrum as well as share the ways his engineering degree applied unilaterally.
Speaker Bio:
Dean Landers thought he was escaping from Tech in 2008 with a degree in mechanical engineering that, at the time, he was burned out by and disillusioned with. He immediately began teaching AP Physics at Peachtree Ridge High School. Over the next five years, he earned his master’s in Science Education, earned a Fulbright grant to teach in India, spent a summer at Tech working with the Inventure Prize as a GIFT Fellow, and was honored as Teacher of the Year. He loved a lot of things about teaching and the adventures it permitted him to have, but for several reasons felt drawn back to mechanical engineering and began to explore new career opportunities in 2013. He left teaching and helped CRB Consulting Engineers open their Atlanta office where he now does mechanical engineering, recruiting, and business development.
He lives just outside of Decatur, Georgia with his wife, Margaret. They are expecting their first son this summer. In his free time, Dean enjoys running, reading, good conversation (especially over good food and beverages), and drawing.
