The Office of Organizational Development hosts a free discussion on the beliefs, myths and stereotypes of the different Hispanic populations. This workshop will be led by Jorge Breton, program manager for Hispanic Initiatives at Georgia Tech.
In today's increasingly global economy, it is crucial to have, at the very least, a basic understanding and appreciation of other cultures. Hispanics are the fastest growing ethnic group in the U.S. and currently represent about 14% of the total U.S. population, making it the largest minority group. The number of Hispanics in Georgia, Atlanta, and at Georgia Tech continues to rise every year. The Spanish and Portuguese languages are becoming more and more popular as have a variety of dances such as Salsa, Capoeira, Merengue and Tango, and foods such as paella, mangos, plantains, and "ropa vieja".
Some of the topics covered in this interactive, fun-filled workshop include: beliefs, myths and stereotypes; family; body language; social and business etiquette; attitudes towards time; relationship building and teambuilding; Spanish, Castilian, Portuguese, English: true and false cognates; food; music; dances; religion; how to bridge the gap: education, workforce, politics; challenges and opportunities.
