There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Call it STEM to STEAM. As many institutions of secondary and higher education narrow their focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects, a movement is afoot to promote awareness of the importance of art and design as tools of innovation and creative thinking (STEAM). So avers Georgia Tech, whose TechArts Festival, which runs through March 1, encompasses dance, music, art, theater and poetry. The intersection of art and science is well represented by the Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition, which rewards new ideas in musical instrument design, engineering and performance.
