There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. One of the most innovative initiatives in materials science and engineering has been the growth in the use of computational methods. Further innovation has extended computational methods in materials science to link to those in design, now an emerging technology called Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME). The National Academy of Engineering 2008 report on ICME reported: “Perhaps the greatest challenge facing the development of ICME is a cultural one — that is, becoming an established practice in the science and engineering profession.” Mr. Hamm will share examples and thoughts of both his own personal journey from heat and beat metallurgist to computational materials science (CMS) and ICME advocate, as well as his experiences with cultural issues in spreading the technology by getting engineers, managers, and designers interested and involved as well. Additional perspectives will be provided on the return on investment in industrial CMS, as well as thoughts on the future of the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI), a recent and important initiative of the US Government.
