The Georgia Tech Polymer Network welcomes Professor Richard McCullough from Harvard University on December 8, 2014. Professor McCullough will present a lecture entitled, “From Discovery to Start-up: A Journey and Status Report on Printable Electronics and Promoting Corporate Partnerships and a Start-up Culture in Universities”

We are entering the new era of printed electronics where engineered organic electronic materials can be used as printable transistors and solar cells, are critical materials in the future of lighting and displays, and new materials are leading to functional printable metals in 3-D printing. Discoveries made in our lab that have led to the commercialization of university-based research in printable electronics will be presented. Universities are working harder than ever to develop rich innovation ecosystems that promote start-ups and new corporate partnerships. In this talk, I will also present experiences in the building of and success of university innovation ecosystems with examples from Harvard University and Carnegie Mellon University.

About Richard McCullough

Richard McCullough is the Vice Provost for Research at Harvard University where he has broad responsibility and oversight for the review, development, and implementation of policies related to the organization and execution of academic research, especially in the sciences, and to aspects of the University's relations with foundations and industry. Prior to being named Vice Provost for Research, at Harvard, he was the Vice President for Research at Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, where he also had served as the Dean of the Mellon College of Science, and head of the Department of Chemistry. The Thomas Lord Professor of Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon, McCullough, whose research has principally been focused on developing printable electronic materials, founded two companies: Plextronics Inc, and Liquid X Printed Metals. Richard McCullough has a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Texas, Dallas and earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in chemistry at Johns Hopkins University, and did his postdoctoral fellowship at Columbia University.
