Phillipe Hazane, Space Attaché and Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) representative, visited Georgia Tech to speak about French and European space activities and policies on October 22, 2014. The talk was co-sponsored by the Center for International Strategy, Technology, and Policy (CISTP) and the Center for European and Transatlantic Studies, both of the Nunn School. Nunn School Assistant Professor Mariel Borowitz served as moderator for the talk.

In his remarks, Hazane discussed the mission and activities of CNES, France’s space agency, and the European Space Agency (ESA). Hazane characterized the work of ESA and CNES, as well as the EU’s overall space effort, as being a success due to high levels of expertise, flexibility, industry competitiveness, and domain integration.  He also covered specific European initiatives and goals, the configuration of Europe’s space institutions, and looming strategic and policy decisions that will confront France and the EU in coming years.

Before being appointed as Space Attaché and CNES Representative in the French Embassy in the US in July 2011, Philippe Hazane, a senior technologist in remote sensing systems and GNSS system operations, served as the Deputy Assistant Director of the Mission Operations Directorate at the Toulouse Space Centre at CNES, which is in charge of operating all space missions under the responsibility of the French Space Agency. In the course of his career Mr. Hazane has held numerous leadership positions - including as the chairman of the CNES Senior Review, as well as the Head of Mission Center Operation Office, where he was in charge of mission centers such as universe study, navigation, and microgravity.

Founded in 1961, CNES is the government agency responsible for shaping and implement France’s space policy in Europe. Its task is to invent the space systems of the future, bring space technologies to maturity and guarantee France’s independent access to space. CNES is a pivotal player in Europe’s space programme, and a major source of initiatives and proposals that aim to maintain France and Europe’s competitive edge.
