Prof. Erik P. Johnson presented his paper "Pollution and Health Impacts of Electricity Congestion," coauthored with Juan Moreno-Cruz, at the Morehouse College Research Colloquium. The paper examines the changes in emissions from electricity generators in response to transmission constraints in the electricity grid. It also examines how pollution exposure and health outcomes change in each county in the northeastern US due to these constraints. There is a broad pattern of reduced pollution and better health outcomes in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio with a large increase in pollution in the eastern seaboard of the United States. The gains from the reduced pollution outweigh the losses from the increased pollution along the seaboard.
