Georgia Tech and Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts will honor Zimbabwean human rights attorney Beatrice Mtetwa as recipient of the Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social Courage at a luncheon to be held noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 13.  The luncheon will follow the Allen Prize Symposium held from 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 p. m. that morning.  Both events will be in The Biltmore ballrooms. The symposium is open to all.  RSVP is required in advance for the seated luncheon, but the doors are open at 12:30 p.m. for anyone wanting to join the audience.

Ms. Mtetwa is celebrated around the world for her fearless and successful defenses of those persecuted under a repressive policitical system. She advocates for justice under the rule of law and has won the acquittal of many who have been arrested, imprisoned, and tortured by the Mugabe government including local and internationial journalists, civic activists, farmers and landowners, and every day citizens who have spoken out for human rights, justice, and democratic process in Zimbabwe. Ms. Mtetwa has been arrested and beaten in attempts to stop her work.  In 2013, she defended herself against government charges brought against her.  A trailer for documentary film about her that was made in secret is available via links below.

By recognizing her with the Allen Prize, Georgia Tech supports a universal message that human rights and the rule of law are imperative for a civil society.

The Allen Prize is given annually to individuals who, by asserting moral principle, have positively affected public discourse at the risk of their careers, livelihoods, and sometimes lives.

The luncheon is one of three events on campus hosted by the Ivan Allen College from November 11 - 13 to recognize Beatrice Mtetwa.
