The Institute for Electronics and Nanotechnology at the Georgia Tech would like to congratulate Toby Xu and his advisor, F. Levent Degertekin, of the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering and the Institute for Electronics and Nanotechnology at Georgia Tech. Both scholars received research awards at the IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium, held September 3-6, 2014.

Professor Degertekin was awarded the "2014 Carl Hellmuth Hertz Ultrasonic Achievement Award" for contributions to micromachined ultrasonic and opto-mechanical transducers, and high speed Atomic Force Microscopy.

Degertekin's research focuses on capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs) focuses on development of new CMUT structures with improved performance using the advantages of microfabrication technology, and design and implementation of catheter based imaging arrays for intravascular and intracardiac ultrasound imaging for interventional cardiology applications.

Mr. Xu, a Ph.D. candidate in Mechanical Engineering, received the "Best Student Paper Award" for Improved Performance CMUT-on-CMOS Devices Using ALD Hafnium Oxide Insulation Layer, co-authored by Coskun Tekes, and F. Levent Degertekin. 

Mr. Xu stated, "I just want to thank all of the IEN staff/interns/co-ops for helping/supporting my research throughout the past few years. I could not have done this without you. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to work with so many great minds and a world class facility."
