Lecture Title: Lessons Learned on Hard Work, Thinking Ahead, and Just Showing Up

Lecture Abstract: There is no such thing as an overnight success. Like the actor who does ten years of dinner theater before making it big, most of today’s leaders undergo significant challenges on the road to success. However, applying those insights can lead to significant growth. Join John Marshall, Senior Vice President and General Manager of AirWatch by VMware, as he shares how his experiences at Georgia Tech helped him take AirWatch from an apartment startup to a billion dollar buyout.

About John Marshall: John Marshall started AirWatch in 2003 running Cat-5 cable behind grease vats at local coffee shops for Wi-Fi HotSpots. After the iPhone emerged, he shifted the company’s focus to help organizations manage mobile devices for business use. With that pivot, the company grew from 150 to 1,900 employees in 4 years with 13,000 customers in 150 countries. In 2013, Marshall secured the largest Series A funding round of any software company in recent history at $200 million in 2013 and a year later he led the company’s acquisition by VMware for $1.54 billion. Ernst & Young named Marshall Entrepreneur of the Year 2013 for Technology.
