Dr. Bracewell refined a study design of tutoring sessions with English Language Learners (ELL) to test the hypothesis that using gestures to accompany explanations of writing concepts is more effective than not employing gestural cues. This research is based on an initial pilot study, presented at the Southeastern Writing Centers Conference in February 2014. Dr. Bracewell and an English Language Institute Tutor, Melissa Aberle-Grasse, are planning to implement the new, quasi-experimental study in Fall 2014, pending approval from the Institutional Review Board. Upon successful completion of this study, Dr. Bracewell and Ms. Aberle-Grasse intend to publish the results as a journal article.
