The Frederick Law Olmsted Symposium will gather leading experts in Atlanta June 2, 2014, for a discussion of the latest research and practice in sustainable urban infrastructure.
The symposium is a celebration of the new Olmsted endowed faculty position in Georgia Tech’s School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the event is the official beginning of the search for an educator and researcher to fill this unique position. Speakers will link Olmsted’s ideas and designs to the current challenges facing our urban landscapes, covering urban ecology, transportation, public policy and the built environment’s impact on public health.
The event is presented by Reginald DesRoches, Ph.D., chair of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering in Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering, and Ellen Dunham-Jones, AIA, professor of Architecture and Urban Design and MSUD Coordinator in Tech’s College of Architecture. Speakers include Richard Jackson, professor and chair of Environmental Health and Science at the University of California, Los Angeles Fielding School of Public Health; Howard Frumkin, dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Washington; Diane Davis, professor of Urbanism and Development at Harvard University; Frederick Steiner, dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin; Lynn Richards, president and chief executive officer of Congress for the New Urbanism; and Elizabeth Macdonald, associate professor of Urban Design at the University of California, Berkeley.
