New landscaping, retaining walls and underground utilities are scheduled to be installed along Techwood Drive between Bobby Dodd Way and North Avenue. Site preparation started May 5, with expected completion by mid-August.
The utilities part of the project replaces the existing steam and condensate lines that supply Harris Residence Hall and Brittain Dining Hall. This underground work will require Techwood Drive to be closed to vehicular traffic for a three-week window from May 12-30. During this period, pedestrian traffic will be routed along the west side of the road.
The wooden crosstie retaining wall in front of the residence halls will also be replaced with a more permanent, granite rubble form. The demolition will result in wider sidewalks, as well as improved curbing, steps and ramps.
"The overall appearance will be changed significantly," said Gerald Shumake, construction manager in Georgia Tech Facilities.
Lastly, in keeping with the Stormwater Master Plan, crews will install a 19,500-gallon cistern, for rainwater collection and redistribution.
