In The 39 Steps, a man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent who says she's a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called "The 39 Steps" is hot on the man's trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale! A riotous blend of virtuoso performances and wildly inventive stagecraft, The 39 Steps amounts to an unforgettable evening of pure pleasure!

*Clowns (The clowns are traditionally played by two men, but I am willing to consider a woman for a clown role. I am also willing to expand the cast to include additional clowns.)

Auditions will be May 12th and 13th at 7 pm. Possible call backs on May 14th.

Please;

- prepare a short (30 seconds to 1 minute) comedic monologue

- 16 bars (about 30 seconds) of an acapella comedic song (preferably a comedic British music hall song)

- Be prepared to improv

All the roles in the play are performed by four actors. One plays Richard Hannay; a female plays the three woman in the play; and two “clowns” play every other character, including heroes, villains, men, women, children, and even the occasional inanimate object. The following is only a partial list of those many characters.

THE MAN / RICHARD HANNAY: A dapper English gentleman straight from Central Casting with an athletic build and pencil thin mustache. Just returned from the war, Richard Hannay is bored—until Annabella Schmidt comes into his life and starts him on a heroic and hilarious journey.

THE WOMAN / ANNABELLA SCHMIDT: An exotic secret agent, Annabella Schmidt is in dire need of Hannay’s help.

PAMELA: A beautiful woman, Pamela is lured into Hannay’s adventure but is skeptical of his claims of innocence.

MARGARET: Crofter the farmer’s wife, Margaret is a shy young woman who dreams of life and adventure in the city.

THE CLOWNS: The two “clowns” play every other character, including heroes, villains, men, women, children, and even the occasional inanimate object, including, but not limited to:

CROFTER: A deeply jealous and suspicious Scottish farmer, Crofter houses Hannay for a night while he is on the run.

MR. MEMORY: A stage performer, Mr. Memory has the ability to recall thousands of facts on command.

PROFESSOR JORDAN: Surrounded in mystery, Professor Jordan may hold the key to learning what and who “The 39 Steps” are.
