There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Full Summary: Handover modeling and admission control for small cell cellular systems

Speaker:  Ravikumar Balakrishnan

Title:
Handover modeling and admission control for small cell cellular systems

Abstract:
The need for several orders of magnitude increase in system capacity and improved cellular coverage has led to the proliferation of smaller low-powered base stations overlaid on the existing macrocell layer. This type of network that includes a number of overlapping base stations, each with its unique characteristics including transmission power, backhaul technology is termed as a heterogeneous network (HetNet). The emergence of the HetNet paradigm leads to several research challenges and calls for a profound rethinking of several existing approaches for mobility management and self organization functions among other issues. In the first part of the talk, novel traffic-aware admission control and scheduling algorithms for hybrid-access small cells will be discussed. Following this, handover performance modeling and a local anchor based handover scheme for small cells will be covered.

Speaker Bio:
Ravikumar Balakrishnan received his undergraduate degree in ECE from Anna University, India and his masters degree in ECE from Georgia Tech. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Georgia Tech under the guidance of Dr. Ian F. Akyildiz in the area of next-generation cellular systems, focusing on mobility management in small cell cellular systems.
