Richard Utz recently delivered a paper, “Quo Vadis, English Studies,” at this year’s Annual Meeting of the Modern Language Association of America in Chicago. Utz’s paper, part of a section on “Rhetoric as a New Paradigm in English Studies” organized by the Division on the History and Theory of Rhetoric and Composition, interrogated the status of “English” as a true disciplinary area and proposed a number of ways in which the various disciplines currently subsumed under “English” might more profitably become part of other disciplinary habitats.
