Abstract: There is increasing evidence that our climate is changing and that mankind is responsible for some of the changes. In this talk I will briefly review this evidence and then discuss the activities we started at the Department of Energy to try to ameliorate these effects. Much progress has been made in the automobile business and in the adoption of wind and solar but there is much left to be done. At the same time scientists have many ideas on how to make progress and some of these will be reviewed.
Bio: Dr. Bill Brinkman joined Bell Labs in 1966, where he held a number of positions, including Vice President of Research at Bell Labs during his tenure. He also served as Vice President of Research at Sandia National Laboratories, and joined Princeton University in 2001. Dr. Brinkman has led the American Physical Society as the 2002 President, and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Science, and the American Philosophical Society. In 2009, Dr. Brinkman became the director of the DOE Office of Science which then received more than $5 billion in appropriations, and provides more than 45% of the total funding for fundamental research in the physical sciences in the United States. Dr. Brinkman continued as the director of the Office of Sciences until he retired from his post in April of 2013. At this time he shares his time between Princeton and University of Pennsylvania.
