Margaret KonkolFour of Margaret Konkol's first-year Writing and Communication Program students in “Atlanta Food Systems” were selected to present their posters at Tech4Good, an Institute-wide showcase of more than 30 civic engagement projects created at Georgia Tech.
Konkol's students examined the values, practices, and social conditions that shape food production, distribution, and consumption here in Atlanta. The projects created by the students chosen for the Tech4Good showcase included collaborative human-geography inspired multi-modal research posters addressing the questions “how does a neighborhood feed itself and what are the challenges a neighborhood faces in meeting this goal?” Each poster represents an analysis of the food system surrounding a particular MARTA station.
Working in small groups, students conducted preliminary research before making site visits and meeting with neighborhood residents and community gardeners. The goal of each project was simple: to establish critical frameworks through which to argue for specific actions by the community and the city at large to improve food security in the neighborhood surrounding their selected MARTA station.
