Summaries

Summary Sentence: Faculty Development Workshop

Full Summary: This workshop will feature faculty who will highlight their flipped classes, the lessons they are learning, and the impact this change is having on their students. Come find out if flipping is for you-- and if it is, how you might implement it.

Have you heard that many Georgia Tech faculty are now offering their lectures online?

Do you want to explore new ways to target learning objectives that your students are struggling to achieve?

Do you want to learn more about best practices for flipping a class?

Many faculty across campus are experimenting with flipping their classes--there are eight faculty members in Civil and Environmental Engineering alone.  Engineering has the largest cadre of flippers but Institute-wide, from Mathematics to Business, the flipped model is a growing trend.

So far the “flipped” approach seems to be improving student learning at Georgia Tech and increasing faculty satisfaction with teaching as well.  However, like any pedagogical approach, the key is effective implementation.  We can move the delivery of content online, but we then have to be smart about what we do with the class time this frees up.  On the other hand, some of us want to spend more time working with students in class to help them master critical concepts and skills, but we don't want to move lecture content online to make this possible. What are our options?

Join this luncheon workshop where several faculty will highlight their flipped classes, the lessons they are learning, and the impact this change is having on their students. Come find out if flipping is for you-- and if it is, how you might implement this new teaching and learning venue.

Speakers:

Klara Grodzinsky, Instructor, Mathematics

Michael A. Smith, Lecturer, Information Technology Management
