There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. While a proposed license fee for bicycles and other related laws appears to be dead in the Florida legislature, the growing number of cyclist around the country has led some commentators to believe similar legislation make crop up in other states. Michael Elliott, an associate professor at Georgia Tech's School of City and Regional Planning, doesn't believe that the state laws proposed in Florida are helpful for improving safety and the way that cyclists and motorists interact with each other. "One of strongest statistics about the safety of bicycle riders is that the more you have, the safer they are," said Elliott. He holds that even though bicycle investments may not necessarily keep up with the increase in bicycle ridership, much of the tension between cyclists and motorists can be reduced through education and increased familiarity.
