The opportunity to make a dent in Atlanta's shameful 20 to 25 percent poverty rate is right now according to Mike Dobbins, a professor of planning at Georgia Tech's School of City and Regional Planning. The BeltLine, Fort McPherson, the Atlanta Falcons replacement stadium, and the Multimodal Passenger Terminal collectively represent roughly $5 billion in development in and around some of the city's "most neglected and ignored citizens and their neighborhoods." One strategy borrowed from the London 2012 Olympics and outlined by Dobbins is a binding compact for hiring residents from the six Neighborhood Planning Units surrounding the project sites and a complementary job development organization to train residents.
