DATHA LogoJoin us at DATHA with a rich workshop on October 22 starting 9:30 AM. We will discuss the topic "How can we utilize GT’s resources to work together to improve the lives of older adults?"
Dr. Brad Fain, Human Systems Engineering Branch, Systems Evaluation Division, Electronic Systems Laboratory at the Georgia Tech Research Institute will talk to us about his latest endeavor: The HomeLab. Georgia Tech’s HomeLab initiative provides the capability to conduct in-home research that supports the development of innovative technologiespromoting health, wellness, and independence for older adults. HomeLab brings together a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers and a community of older adults interested in participating in research. Dr. Fain will present the capabilities of the HomeLab for our awareness. There will also be presented and discussed research already performed in the laboratory.
In addition, we will briefly present the recently awarded grant on technologies to support Successful Aging with disability (RERC TechSAge). We will present the projects to be performed under the grant that are aimed to serve as a catalyst for a major shift in the understanding and development of home and community technologies. The programs will focus on advanced rehabilitation engineering and technical R&D to increase knowledge about, availability of, and access to effective, universally-designed technologies that enable people to sustain independence, maintain health, safely engage in basic activities of daily living at home and the community, and participate in society as they age with disability. We hope that this presentation will ignite members to get involved in the different projects of the grant.
We will follow up Dr. Fain and the RERC presentations with a series of questions around the topic "How can we utilize GT’s resources to work together to improve the lives of older adults?" We will divide participants into four teams (Products, Environments, Policy and Services) and discuss opportunities of multidisciplinary collaborations, funding, access/facilities, applications, to mention a few. We will provide tools and interactive methods for developing and documenting discussions. The goal is to arrive to a list of recommendations to share with the group.
We will present the team results through a light lunch provided from 11:30-12:30.
