The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) not only provides students with information on enriching their academic career through research, but also aims to introduce Georgia Tech students to the resources and organizations on campus available to assist them in pursuing their own ideas and passions. If your son or daughter has an entrepreneurial spirit or is simply interested in learning more about the transformation from an idea to an invention to a potential startup company, there are several programs, competitions, and organizations at Georgia Tech to stimulate such innovation.
The 2014 InVenture Prize is starting now! The InVenture Prize is Georgia Tech’s annual innovation competition for undergraduate students. Six individual students or student teams will have the opportunity to pitch their inventions to a panel of judges and more than 1,000 screaming fans in the final round of the competition, which is filmed live and aired on Georgia Public Broadcasting. Total prize money is $35,000, including a US patent. Startup Exchange is a student organization dedicated to fostering entrepreneurialism among Tech’s students. Anyone can come to their open weekly meetings where ideas are born, discussion breeds inspiration, and no question is unimportant. Startup Exchange is also the program behind Startup Semester, a competitive and intense 10-week workshop to help student teams turn their visions into tangible business models. The Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC) and VentureLab are startup incubators located on-campus in Technology Square. ATDC works with not only Georgia Tech students, but all Georgia innovators, in any stage of business development. Since 1980, this organization has seen the successful evolution of more than 150 companies and raised over $2 billion in financing. VentureLab was recently ranked #2 by UBI Index in a study of university startup incubators from across the world. VentureLab helps create startup companies based on Georgia Tech research. Since its formation in 2001, VentureLab has launched more than 150 technology companies that have attracted more than $700 million in outside funding.
Flashpoint at Georgia Tech is a program that works with startup founders to mold and advance their fledgling businesses into profitable companies. Through the implementation of “startup engineering,” Flashpoint has the resources, connections, and shared knowledge to significantly decrease the costs of startup development and decrease the risk of startup failure.
