GT Computing Career Fair QualcommLuisa “Lo” Botelho reaped the benefits of a College of Computing’s Career Fair in her very first year as a computer science major: She scored a prized internship with Qualcomm as a freshman.
Now in her sophomore year, she eagerly attended two of three days of last week’s fair in hopes of earning her next great job, perhaps with Apple, Microsoft or Harris.
“I love meeting new people,” Botelho said. “And meeting new people who can help my career … even better.”
More than 1,000 students from all over Georgia Tech attended the fair. An average of 40 companies participated each day to discuss internships, mentorships and career opportunities with the students.
“This fair just keeps getting bigger and more essential for our students and corporate partners with each subsequent year,” said Zvi Galil, dean of the College of Computing. “Even though we expanded it to a three-day event, the fair still seems to be bursting at the seams--a testament of its value for the College and the Institute overall.”
The College’s Office of Outreach, Enrollment and Community planned the event and enlisted more than 65 student volunteers to make the event a success. Marielle Thomas of OEC credits student David Long with creating a speedy new check-in system that allowed students to register using their iPads and other mobile devices.
Botelho she was grateful that the College puts on the fair every fall and spring and credits it with helping her make the networking connections that will serve her well in the future. She said students miss out on the full benefit of attending the College of Computing when they don’t go to the career fair.
“Anything I can tell freshman comes from that quote from Wayne Gretzky: ‘You miss all of the shots you don’t take.’”
