If you believe data is the foundation for decision making, then you are likely aware of how challenging obtaining accurate and consistent data can be.
At a Sept. 19 town hall, audience members heard from representatives of the Enterprise Data Management (EDM) Task Force, assigned the responsibility for creating an Institute-level strategy for the management and delivery of timely, reliable data.
Its work corresponds with the fifth goal of Tech’s strategic plan regarding the pursuit of institutional effectiveness.
“Data is an asset, and we want to take a stewardship approach to managing it,” said Sandi Bramblett, executive director for Institutional Planning and Research and Decision Support Services and one of the project’s champions.
Audience members were asked to share their own recommendations on the issues EDM needed to tackle. Clarifications regarding data definitions (for example, simplifying the myriad ways to identify students) as well as policy decisions for improving data sharing across units were among those commonly cited.
“We want to create a framework that will provide accurate and consistent data, as well as reliable tools, that will inform good decision-making for campus users,” said Lori Sundal, director of Enterprise Information Systems in the Office of Information Technology and second project champion.
Building upon two years of discovery and input from all areas of campus, Georgia Tech is partnering with North Highland Consulting to assist with building its strategy. North Highland’s previous higher education clients include Emory University, the University of Colorado, and Vanderbilt University.
EDM and North Highland representatives will spend the rest of the semester meeting with stakeholders to assess the current state and develop a roadmap for process improvement. The North Highland team will will work with the project leadership team and subject matter experts as required.
