Dr. Brandon Houghtalen is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music and Ensemble Director at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is the conductor of the Georgia Tech Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, and Brass Ensemble. Additionally, he serves on the Oxford Study Abroad Program faculty and the staff of the Yellow Jacket Marching Band. His teaching and research activities focus on audience and community engagement, arts sustainability, concert experience design, repertoire, and music education. His website and podcast MusicEdResource.com has become a leader in the field of music education and has been the subject of several conference presentations. Dr. Houghtalen is currently co-teaching a unique, new course which synthesizes music theory, history, aural training, and music technology. He is an active consultant, adjudicator, and guest conductor with programs throughout the United States and has served both the National Band Association (Young Conductors/Composers Mentor Project) and the College Band Directors National Association (Band Education Symposium). His primary conducting teachers include Gary Hill and Allan McMurray with additional study with Carl St. Clair, Gerard Schwarz and the late James DePreist. He has performed with professional, community, university, and military bands and orchestras throughout the United States. Dr. Houghtalen holds degrees in music education and conducting from the University of Tennessee, the University of Colorado, and Arizona State University.
