Members of Georgia Tech’s Student Planning Association will join a worldwide project to reimagine our urban street spaces when they host PARK(ing) Day on Friday, Sept. 20.

Two parking spaces along 5th Street at Technology Square will be turned into a miniature park for lounging, studying and enjoying gourmet snacks from local Atlanta vendors. The event lasts from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free to the Georgia Tech and Atlanta communities.

PARK(ing) Day was created in 2005 by a San Francisco art and design studio, Rebar Group Inc., as an exercise in “tactical urbanism.” The group converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. It’s now a global, open-source template for an annual event to promote urban open space.

The Student Planning Association comprises graduate students in Georgia Tech’s School of City and Regional Planning, an internationally recognized program in the College of Architecture devoted to studying urban, environmental, economic and community development issues.
