Summaries

Summary Sentence: For all graduate students interested in applying for an NSF fellowship.

Full Summary: For all graduate students interested in applying for an NSF fellowship.

Faculty Presenter:

Dr. Manu Platt, Biomedical Engineering, Previous NSF Reviewer

Sessions are for ALL students who plan to apply for NSF or other graduate fellowships. The principles of writing a proposal will be valuable for all students.

  • NSF applications are due in early November.
  • There will be a discussion of the essays required and the NSF requirement to include broader impact and intellectual merit statements as well as information about references. NSF has changed essay requirements this year, and the agency is no longer requiring 3 essays. Students need to learn about the new requirements.
  • Students are eligible to apply in their senior year and at the beginning of their first or second year in graduate school. BS/MS students are eligible to apply the year after they complete this combined degree. Otherwise students who hold a master’s degree are not eligible.
  • Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply for NSF Graduate Research Fellowships. International students are welcome to attend to learn general tips about applying for fellowships for which they may be eligible, but they are not able to apply for this award.
