Prof. Christine Ries, School of Economics, has been invited to testify to the Fair Tax Study Committee empanelled last week by Senator Judson Hill. In the first of three meetings, on July 17, Dr. Ries will present a critical analysis of Georgia tax reform initiatives in the last five years, especially those issues raised while she served on the Special Council for Tax Reform and Fairness for Georgians. Dr. Ries will describe the fundamentals of pro-growth tax reform packages and the political concerns that challenge such reforms. She will also describe her model www.taxreformthegame.com. This is a web-interfaced simulator, actively used by legislators and available to the public, for simulation of the effects of various blends of tax reform components.
She will present her analysis of tax reform initiatives in other states and the likely impact on Georgia's competitiveness at attracting new business to the state.
This is the subject of her capstone course for Georgia Tech majors in economics. Select students have presented the results of their studies from this course to combined Georgia Assembly committees.
Dr. Ries has recently been featured in programs on Fox News and Georgia Public Television discussing the impact on Georgia and other states of Film Production Tax Credits.
