This summer, Campus Recreation’s Outdoor Recreation Georgia Tech (ORGT) is traveling all over the globe, leading outdoor adventure trips to many different climates, elevations, and cultures. ORGT is partnering with FASET orientation to lead its sixth annual Tech Treks Adventure Programs. These three-, nine-, and 11-day adventures are optional but give incoming freshmen a great opportunity to mix and mingle with upperclass students and meet their fellow classmates in a unique way. They are designed to help incoming students prepare for the academic rigor of Georgia Tech as well as the new frontiers of life on their own. Students will be challenged to do their best, to look inward, and to plan for success. A portion of each day will focus on an aspect of their future at Tech – expectations, fears, and celebrations.

Tech Treks Minnesota is a nine-day canoeing adventure that is beginner friendly and includes rock climbing and camping with fellow students.

For students who wish to stay a little closer to home, Tech Trek Southeast includes a three-day rock climbing and rafting program, along with camping under star-filled skies.

The Tech Trek to Alaska is a great experience, allowing new students to enjoy nature through backpacking, mountain biking, kayaking, ice climbing, and wildlife viewing. This adventure is reserved for incoming freshmen only and is designed to ease the transition from high school to Georgia Tech. During this 11-day program (July 9-19, 2013), highly skilled professional guides give students advice and information on how to succeed at Tech while also teaching them how to navigate the wilderness with a GPS. This trek encourages participants to expand their interpersonal, leadership, and decision-making skills. Students will have the chance to form friendships that could last a lifetime.

ORGT is also leading international learning experiences in China, Scotland, and Canada this summer in partnership with China’s Tianjin University and the President’s Scholars and Stamps Leadership Scholars programs. These unique adventures take Georgia Tech students around the world for leadership training and an outdoor adventure.

In addition to these far-flung adventures, Outdoor Recreation Georgia Tech offers unique experiences for students who do not have time to travel abroad. Instructional classes are a great way for beginners to learn about caving, rafting, climbing, sea kayaking, and mountain biking. Once a student has learned the basics, he or she can join a sport group to expand their newly acquired skills. Space is limited, so register for these classes today!
