Tyrone Wells Jr., a Ph.D. candidate at Georgia Tech's School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has been awarded the Gunnar Nicholson Exchange Fellowship. He will embark from the United States on a year-long research initiative at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenberg, Sweden to investigate novel strategies for biomaterial production.
This event will be in partnership with Professors H. Theliander (Chalmers) and A. Ragauskas (Georgia Tech). For this initiative, they will investigate the the utilization of inexpensive and abundant plant-derived biopolymers as precursors for carbon fiber development. By isolating and upgrading these key biopolymers as a byproduct or from the waste streams of the forestry, agriculture, and pulp and paper industry, they will illuminate novel strategies that may broaden the availability of strong and highly versatile graphite fibers.
Congratulations, Tyrone!
