There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. The released heat from cities is changing temperatures in areas more than 1,000 miles away reports a new study from National Center for Atmospheric Research on the urban heat island effect. "Cities occupy just a few percent of the global land surface, but the amount of energy released as waste heat is contributing downwind to pretty significant changes in climate," commented Brian Stone, Associate Professor of City and Regional Planning and Director of the Urban Climate Lab at Georgia Tech.
