This month, Prof. Lu Yongyi of Tongji University will deliver a presentation entitled "From National to 'Glocal:' On Cultural Identity in Chinese Modern and Contemporary Architecture"
In search of cultural identity in architectural design has been one of the essential subjects to Chinese architects since the beginning of the 20th Century. It started from the China’s modernization process under the strong influence of the western world. It raised, among Chinese architects, the lasting exploration of interpreting the Chinese traditional architecture and integrating it with the language of western architecture. By a historical review this talk will present the great efforts made by Chinese architects of different generations for this task, and it will also reveal their various ideas and design approaches from time to time in the change of the social and political context.
Yongyi Lu, a professor in Department of Architecture, College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, Shanghai, China. She is teaching architectural history and theories for the undergraduate and graduate students in architecture. She has also been involved in the research on Chinese modern architecture of the 20th Century, as well as in the historic preservation study on the modern architecture and urban heritage in Shanghai.
About the CoA Research Forum: The College of Architecture in partnership with the Georgia Tech Library and Archives hosts a monthly research series entitled the COA Research Forum. Held on the last Thursday of each month in which school is in session, a COA faculty member, research scientist, or student talks about his/her research.
The purpose of the series is to provide an informal forum for members of the Georgia Tech community to present their work, explore ideas, and identify opportunities for collaboration. The talks are free and open to the public. The talks are held in the Architecture Library from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
The Architecture Library is located off the first floor atrium of the West Architecture Building, 247 Fourth Street, Georgia Tech campus
