Madhavan Swaminathan has accepted the position of the John Pippin Chair in Electromagnetics in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech, effective August 1. This professorship was last held by Glenn Smith, ECE Regents' Professor Emeritus.

Dr. Swaminathan previously held the Joseph M. Pettit Professorship in Electronics and has served as the director of the Interconnect and Packaging Center since 2009. He also was the deputy director of the Microsystems Packaging Research Center from 2004-2008. Prior to joining Georgia Tech in 1994, he worked with IBM on packaging for supercomputers. Dr. Swaminathan has published over 350 papers in refereed journals and conferences, and he holds 26 issued patents and is the author and co-editor of two books. He is also the founder and co-founder, respectively, of two spin-off companies, JMD and E-System Design. He leads the Mixed Signal Design Group in ECE, where he has graduated 33 Ph.D. and 15 M.S. students, and conducts research in the areas of computational electromagnetics, computer-aided design, microwave design, and high speed digital design.   

Dr. Swaminathan's research has been recognized through numerous awards, including 16 best paper and best student paper awards, the Technical Excellence Award from Semiconductor Research Corporation in 2007, the IBM Outstanding Faculty Award in 2004 and 2005, the Georgia Tech Outstanding Leadership Award for the Development of Graduate Research Assistants in 2003, and ECE Outstanding Graduate Research Advisor Award in 2002. A Fellow of the IEEE, he is a distinguished lecturer for the IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility Society for 2012-13.
