"Age and Sex Determinants of Bone Phenotype in a Transgenic Mouse Model of Sickle Cell Disease"

Bone pathologies are among the myriad complications of sickle cell disease and are a common cause of pain and morbidity. These pathologies include osteonecrosis, osteoarthritis and vaso-occlusive infarct. The mechanism underlying these structural changes in sickle bone is not fully understood. Our goal is to characterize the bone phenotype in a transgenic mouse model (Townes) of sickle cell disease.

"Mesenchymal Stem Cells Enhance Angiogenic Function in Embryonic Stem Cell-derived Vascular Progenitor Cells"

The derivation of endothelial cells from embryonic stem cells offers a potential source of functional vascular cells that could be utilized for both tissue engineering and cell therapy applications. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) may function as pericytes and play an important role in regulating vascular morphogenesis. This research aims to investigate the angiogenic interactions between MSCs and vascular progenitor cells.
