Barack Obama's defeat of John McCain in 2008 was widely taken to signal the start of an era in which race would no longer be a significant factor in American society. This talk will address: (1) What role did race play in the 2008 election? (2) What is the present status of racial attitudes in America? and (3) What role will race play in the 2012 presidential election?
