Summaries

Summary Sentence: Dr. Pattillo, professor of gynecology at Morehouse School of Medicine was one of George Gey's only African American Students

Full Summary: Dr. Pattillo, professor of gynecology at Morehouse School of Medicine was one of George Gey's only African American Students. He organizes a yearly HeLa conference at Morehouse in honor of Henrietta Lacks.

Dr. Roland Pattillo was one of George Gey's only African-American students at John Hopkins University. Gey was the researcher who grew cells taken from Henrietta Lacks in 1951, when she was treated for cervical cancer. The cells gave rise to the HeLa cell line, understood to be "immortal" because of their ability to infinitely reproduce outside the body. Currently, Pattillo is Professor of Gynecology at Morehouse School of Medicine. Dr. Pattillo will speak on the history of the HeLa, the impact of the story of Henrietta Lacks on medicine, and the future of stem cell research--one of the most enduring legacies of Henrietta Lacks.
