Georgia Tech students, particularly in the College of Engineering have a truly unique opportunity to incorporate an international dimension to their undergraduate education. Georgia Tech-Lorraine is Tech’s campus abroad, fully integrated with the main Atlanta campus. It offers Georgia Tech courses, taught in English by Georgia Tech faculty members. Students are able to receive the same world-class education that is offered in Atlanta, in a true small college setting, with intimate classroom settings. A lecture course offered in Atlanta would have as many as 200 students, while the Metz equivalent could have as few as 15 or 20 students.
An important and compelling feature of this program is the unparalleled opportunities it offers for students to travel throughout Europe and experience the beauty and breadth of the many cultures they discover. This has proven time and again to be a personally transformative experience, as the students discover first-hand what it means to be educated on a global platform, and to grow into global professionals and leaders. To encourage and facilitate students’ travel, most classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday, leaving continuous three-day opportunities for student travel.
Academically, the students tend to perform better at GTL than at the Atlanta campus. This may be attributed to the smaller more intimate class sizes, but is also because students learn quickly of the importance of time management—knowing that they will be traveling over the weekends, they are extremely focused, organized and motivated during the school week.
All out-of-state students pay in-state tuition plus a $2,500 fee to study at GTL, a cost savings of nearly $7,000 per semester. Yves Berthelot, vice provost for International Initiatives states, “The impact of the GTL experience on our students is profound and lasting. Students often tell me that their experience at GTL is one of their more treasured memories of their entire Georgia Tech education.”
Since Georgia Tech-Lorraine opened its doors 20 years ago, more than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students have participated in the program, and its alumni network spans every continent in the world.
