Lecture on Curiosity's Landing & the Future of Space Exploration

*********************************
There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Functionally the new site is identical to the old one. webteam@gatech.edu

Summaries

Summary Sentence: Dr. Charles Elachi, director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will discuss robotic space exploration, Curiosity’s landing and future missions.

Full Summary: Over the last 50 years, Jet Propulsion Laboratory spacecraft have visited every planet in our solar system and roved for more than 8 years on the surface of Mars.

Over the last 50 years, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) spacecraft have visited every planet in our solar system and roved for more than 8 years on the surface of Mars. In addition, space borne telescopes have detected planets around neighboring systems, studied the composition and dynamic of galaxies across the Universe, and monitored changes in our planet’s surface and atmosphere.

In this presentation, Dr. Charles Elachi will discuss the challenges of robotic space and Earth exploration, highlights of Curiosity’s recent landing on Mars, and present some of the engineering and technological challenges for future missions of exploration and discovery.
