K-12 Science Education Framework and Next Generation Science Standards: An Overview

Presented by: Michael F. Schatz, Professor, Georgia Tech School of Physics

The development of national standards for K-12 science education is currently in progress, with input from twenty-six states (including Georgia) and numerous discipline-specific societies. The blueprint for standards development is the 2012 NRC report, “A Framework for K-12 Science Education.” Although the explicit focus is K-12 science, this report describes a fundamental reevaluation of science education that is useful for rethinking undergraduate science.
