BC_London_Site_VisitThe School of Building Construction recently hosted its eighth Summer Study Abroad Program in Europe. It was an exciting time to be in England as students participated in two extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities: the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth and the preparations leading up to London hosting the 2012 Summer Olympics. This year the program was held at the University of Reading’s School of Construction Management and Engineering--one of the world’s largest, most prestigious, and top-rated institutions dealing with the built environment. Professor Thomas M. Keel led the group of Georgia Tech students as they took courses and visited world-class construction firms and projects. Students had to opportunity to speak with industry professionals from around the globe and visited in-progress projects that are now showcased on the national stage of the Olympics.
Highlights of the trip included tours of:
- “The Shard,” When completed, it will be the tallest building in Western Europe
- The ArcelorMittal Orbit, the tallest art structure in Britain and located in heart of the new Olympic Park.
- The top of the British Telcom tower (which can only be visited by special permission and arrangement)
- The Tate Museum of Modern Art new extension project
- Heathrow airport and the construction of its new terminal building
- A one square city block, mixed-use construction complex still under construction
- Network Rail £850m project to upgrade Reading's railway line
- The old university town of Oxford, with a guided tour given by an American-born, Rhodes Scholar and Oxford professor
