Professor Charles Isbell (Interactive Computing) has been appointed the senior associate dean of the College of Computing, with responsibility for managing much of the College's day-to-day operations, Dean Zvi Galil has announced.
Isbell formerly served as associate dean for academic affairs, overseeing the College's undergraduate and graduate education activities. The promotion serves to make official a role which Galil said Isbell has been performing unofficially for some time.
"In this new role, Charles will assist in managing operations of the College, with continued responsibility for Academic Affairs, in addition to College-level strategic development, hiring, promotion and business operations," Galil said. "Charles has built a number of vital relationships across not only Georgia Tech but the entire University System, not to mention the broader Computing community. It's due to both these relationships and the effectiveness he has shown in his previous positions that I believe Charles will be very helpful in this post."
Isbell earned his bachelor's in computer science from Georgia Tech and his Ph.D. from MIT. His primary research area is interactive artificial intelligence, and he has published some 70 peer-reviewed papers, in addition to a number of workshop and demo presentations. In addition to his faculty appointment in the School of Interactive Computing, he is affiliated with the GVU Center and the Center for Robotics & Intelligent Machines.
