As part of the monthly Nunn School Security Journal Club, Emory School of Medicine Visiting Associate Professor Anthony Lemieux spoke on his use of experimental methods to examine the role and impact of grievance on support for (and choice of) terrorism versus peaceful actions (like protest). He highlighted his work "Grievance, Social Dominance Orientation, and Authoritarianism in the Choice and Justification of Terror Versus Protest" co-authored with SUNY-Albany's Victor Asal, from the December 2010 issue of the Dynamics of Asymmetric Conflict.
The Nunn School Security Journal Club aims to foster informal discussion of prominent contemporary security issues and was inaugurated in September 2011 by Nunn School Assistant Professor Margaret E. Kosal. Each month one faculty member and one grad student present (separately) on a recent scholarly article from a high-level journal. Journal clubs are customary in graduate programs in the sciences. All INTA grad students are welcome to join. The discussions are self-contained and accessible to a first year INTA graduate student.
The Security Journal Club Topics may include - but are not limited to - the causes and prevention of war, post-Cold War security problems, ethnic conflict and peacekeeping, the rise of global terrorist networks, counterinsurgency and small wars, irregular warfare, civil-military affairs, unconventional warfare, international peacekeeping organizations, arms control regimes, weapons proliferation, counterterrorism, diplomatic and military history, regional security issues, alliance patterns and challenges, cybersecurity, weaponization of space, bargaining and conflict resolution, and deterrence in the 21st Century.
