Overview

The White House recently announced the “Big Data Research and Development Initiative,” a series of programs to develop new tools and techniques to manage vast and complex data sets to help address societal challenges in areas such as environmental and biomedical research, education, and national security.

Georgia Tech has been building much expertise and has developed many projects in the last several years in Big Data, and we are now very well-positioned to compete for these awards.

Faculty are invited to participate in a Big Data Research Planning Meeting where our campus community will be able to network and discuss initiatives that will carry us forward in our Big Data efforts.

The Research Planning Meeting is a high-level coordinated effort in response to the federal funding opportunities. This is a first step intended to help in the development of effective teams and projects. The goal of this and other coordinated efforts is to maximize our successes in these competitions. Activities will include dissemination of information, matching researchers interested in collaborating on responses to RFPs, and some high level strategizing in the Big Data area.

For additional information, please contact Richard Fujimoto, interim director of the Institute for Data and HPC at Georgia Tech, at fujimoto@cc.gatech.edu

Program Format

The planned format is 15-minute sessions, each devoted to one topic. There will be brief, 5-minute comments by the session lead, and 10 minutes of discussion.

Funding Information

As a first step, we have set up a t-square web site named "Big Data" which will serve as a repository for information as we move forward. If you would like to gain access to the web site, please send an email to Lometa Mitchell (lometa@cc.gatech.edu) in the School of Computational Science and Engineering to be added to this site.
