There is now a CONTENT FREEZE for Mercury while we switch to a new platform. It began on Friday, March 10 at 6pm and will end on Wednesday, March 15 at noon. No new content can be created during this time, but all material in the system as of the beginning of the freeze will be migrated to the new platform, including users and groups. Before the recession, the 10-county metro core was adding 100,000 people a year. That's contracted by two-thirds, to an average of 34,000 a year for the past three years, according to the Atlanta Regional Commission. . . .Nancey Green Leigh, a professor of city and regional planning at Georgia Tech, sees wisdom in metro Atlanta growing from within, instead of depending so much on an influx of people and corporations. "You need to look at the skills you have in the labor force, and match that," she said. "We shouldn't omit ideas that tie into university resources, new technologies, new inventions . . . It's time to take stock and strengthen the weaknesses."
