Since 2006, Georgia Tech, the Student Government Association (SGA) and USA TODAY have partnered together in promoting the Collegiate Readership Program. The program is designed to enhance college studentsâ learning experience by exposing them to news pertinent to their living and learning community. By providing the bridge between campus and the rest of the world, the readership program advances global awareness, civic literacy and social responsibility. Among the many benefits, the Collegiate Readership Program empowers students to seek information and knowledge outside the classroom and prepares for them for a lifetime of learning.
The Collegiate Readership Program currently distributes free newspapers to students at 6 locations on campus. Plans are to expand the programâs reach to 10-12 locations for the spring. Students can choose from USA TODAY, the New York Times, and the Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC). According to Nick Wellkamp, president of the Undergraduate Student Government at Georgia Tech, âI see many students utilizing the program every day, and I think it has been a great success in making our students more aware of the statewide, national, and global issues that will affect our generation.â
In addition to the free distribution of newspapers, the Collegiate Readership Program also provides students additional engagement opportunities on campus. Ken Paulson, editor and senior vice president of news at USA TODAY, visited Georgia Tech in February 2008, as part of the Finding Common Ground speaker series.
Our partnership with USA TODAY is stronger than ever and we look forward to providing additional learning programs to engage the whole student community. As part of our relationship, Georgia Tech is proud to offer parents of Georgia Tech students a free subscription to Campus Coverage, a weekly newsletter that explores news, trends and issues in higher education. We invite parents to view the Aug. 28, 2008, edition of Campus Coverage. Parents, click here to sign-up to receive the weekly emails from USA TODAY.
The Georgia Tech Parents Program welcomes your feedback on the Collegiate Readership Program and Campus Coverage. Our goal is to provide valuable learning opportunities for the Georgia Tech community â" this includes you! Please send an email to parents@gatech.edu and tell us what you think.
