The buzz around campus is all about Georgia Tech-Lorraineâs (GTL) summer program. As soon as the applications were posted, students began applying in droves. While, the official deadline for summer semester was set for mid-February 2012, the applications were closed mid-November - three months early - because the capacity had been exceeded.
Since the summer undergraduate program was first offered in 1998, student enrollments have steadily grown - from 31 students to its present capacity of 220. The unique opportunity to live and study in the beautiful and historic city of Metz, France, and to discover Europe from this central location has lured increasing numbers of students to this program for the past 13 years.
Five years ago, Georgia Tech-Lorraine offered the first full academic year to undergraduate students. From the initial enrollment of 16, the program has more than quadrupled in size, with nearly 70 students who will be at GTL this spring. In fact, the fall and spring GTL programs offer students the greatest opportunities for cultural immersion. During those periods, French and American students populate student dorms (French students vacate the campus in late June). Moreover, the opportunity to travel extends over a nearly five-month period, rather than the 12-week summer program. Students enjoy the tranquility of traveling outside of the summer tourist season, with better prices and a virtual absence of tourists.
Georgia Tech-Lorraine is a campus abroad, yet is fully integrated with the Atlanta campus. It offers Georgia Tech courses, taught in English by Georgia Tech faculty members. Students are able to receive the same world-class education offered in Atlanta, in a true small college setting, with intimate classes and opportunities to interact both inside and outside the classroom with their professors.
All out-of-state students pay in-state tuition plus a $2,500 fee to study at GTL, a cost savings of nearly $7,000 per semester. Yves Berthelot, professor of mechanical engineering and president of GTL said, âThe impact of the GTL experience on our students is profound and lasting. Students often tell me that their experience at GTL is one of their more treasured memories of their entire Georgia Tech education.â
Georgia Tech-Lorraine opened its doors 20 years ago as a graduate electrical engineering program. Its graduate programs now also offer programs of study in mechanical engineering and computer science. To date, GTL has educated more than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and its alumni network spans every continent in the world. Georgia Tech-Lorraine continues to fulfill its mission to educate tomorrowâs global leaders. And in the process, the students have an experience of a lifetime. Patrick Rucker, a fourth-year electrical engineering who just returned from the fall semester at GTL said, âIt was the best part of my entire experience at Georgia Tech - I feel that I have grown personally and academically in ways that would not have been possible without this experience.â
