The School of Biology would like to congratulate its 2010 award winners, who were recently honored at an institute-wide ceremony. Awards and their 2010 winners are listed below:

Cherry Emerson Research Award, given to a junior or senior Biology major in recognition of a significant contribution to science through their undergraduate research. This award honors two members of the Emerson legacy at Georgia Tech: Cherry L Emerson Sr. and Jr. This year, we had two winners:

  • Laura Couser, based on her work in Terry Snell’s lab on mate recognition pheromone receptors in the rotifer Brachionus manjavacas, and
  • Tyler Cunningham, co based on his work in Michael Goodisman's lab on resource allocation in social wasps

Faculty Award, given by the School of Biology faculty to a graduating Biology major who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship, meritorious character, and significant contributions to the School of Biology. This year’s winner is Tiffany Lowe. Tiffany has performed research in the labs of Frank Loeffler and Patty Sobecky, is a member of Georgia Tech's Womens' Recruitment Board, the Collge of Science Advisory Board, is a one-to-one tutor for Success Programs, and is President of the Biology Student Advisory Council.

John H. Ridley Award, given to a junior Biology major who plans to apply to medical school and has demonstrated outstanding scholarship and talent for research. We have three winners this year:

  • John McCaskey, who is conducting independent research with Linda Green and Meghan Duffy
  • Ethan Speir, who is conducting independent research with Steve Harvey, and
  • Karla van Rensburg, who is conducting independent research with Meghan Duffy

Colleen Sari Award, given to a junior Biology major based on scholastic achievement, research accomplishments, and financial need. This year's winner is Bonnie Ann Sarrell, who is conducting research in Meghan Duffy’s lab on zooplankton-parasite interactions.

Williams-Walls Award, given to a senior woman in the life sciences with an exceptional GPA and who has applied to graduate school. The award honors the momory of Frederick Anton Williams, father of the founder of Applied Biology, Inc. This year's winner is Shadeah Suleiman.
